Scope and Contents
The Church family papers contain both personal and business correspondence, along with financial records, wills, newspaper clippings, and genealogical materials that span over a century, from 1784 to 1928.
The largest part of the collection is comprised of Church family papers. There are many wills and handwritten bequests to family members, family correspondence, genealogical sketches, financial and property records, as well as a scrapbook of newspaper clippings about the Church family. Included in the collection are correspondence to and from France where the Church's had family and friends.
Some photographs and copies of photographs exist within the collection. A few members of the Church family are pictured. A postcard picture of the Belvidere home and a photograph of a chapel near Belvidere are included as well. Some pictures of Hobart College taken at the beginning of this century are also included.
A thesis by Melissa Carrie Naulin titled "All That a Genteel Family Need Require: The Church Family's Frontier Experience at Belvidere, Allegany County, New York" is also included. This thesis was written using the materials in the Church family papers and was submitted to the faculty at the University of Delaware in 2000.
Arrangement
Due to the first series having been previously arranged, described, and processed, the first series contains materials similar and in some cases identical to the other series. The Church Papers are arranged in 23 series.
Added to the collection in Spring 2000 is a Master's thesis by Melissa Carrie Naulin who used the papers to research the Church family and their Belvidere home for her thesis titled "All That A Genteel Family Need Require: The Church Family's Frontier Experience At Belvidere, Allegany County, New York".
