Guide for Student Employees

Attendance

  • Arrive on time for your shift.
  • If you are unable to work it is your responsibility to drop your shift in LibStaffer.
  • If you have to drop a shift at the last minute contact the library directly.
  • The library will occasionally be open when school is not in session.  If you are scheduled to work during that time but are unable to then you must officially drop your shift in LibStaffer.
  • Repeatedly missing work without making the above arrangements may be cause for dismissal.

Conduct

While working at the circulation desk...

  • You may:
    • Study and do class work (as your library work load allows).
    • Bring your own laptop, tablet, etc.
    • Visit only briefly with friends.
    • Make or receive short phone calls with permission (and must step away from the desk while doing so).
    • Use one earbud but must maintain awareness of staff and patrons as they approach the desk.

  • You may not:
    • Use the library's desktop computer for personal work.
    • Have loud/long conversations with friends.
    • Use headphones which cover your entire ear.

Working with the Public

  • Users of the library are called patrons.  Our patrons include members of the HWS community as well as local residents.
  • While you may study at the circulation desk (as your library work load allows) remember to be aware of our patrons as they approach.
  • Smile, make eye contact and offer assistance.
  • Dress in clothing that is clean and presentable.
  • Patron Privacy:
    • Library records which contain information specific to a particular patron are confidential.  These records include lists of items charged to a patron's account, notices of fines or fees, etc.
    • At the circulation desk you will be accessing patrons' information.  While you may turn the monitor to show them something on the screen, you must take care not to leave that data visible after the patron leaves and must not allow other patrons to see it.
    • The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) gives students (of at least 18 years of age) the right to have control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from their education related records.
